Danville Relishing Top-of-the-Table Test Against Featherstone Lions
The league leaders are preparing for one of their biggest tests of the season this weekend as they travel to face fellow high-flyers Featherstone Lions in a mouth-watering top-of-the-table clash.
Head coach Matt Danville admits excitement is building within the camp ahead of the fixture, with both sides enjoying impressive campaigns so far.
"We're really looking forward to it," said Danville. "These are the games you want to be involved in as a player and as a coach. Featherstone have been one of the standout teams this season and it's a great opportunity for us to test ourselves against another side that's performing well.
"We managed to get the win against them at home, so we're looking to back that up on their patch. The lads are excited, but they're also focused on the job we need to do."
After giving his players a well-earned week off to rest and reset, Danville has been pleased with the response on the training field.
"The mood has been excellent. There's been a real energy about the group and the standards have been high throughout the week. The players know the importance of the game and they've approached training in a positive way and prepared well."
Despite the attention surrounding a meeting between the league's leading contenders, Danville insists his side are keeping their feet firmly on the ground.
"There's always a bit more attention around games involving teams near the top of the table, but ultimately it's still worth the same points. We are sat top of the league and with that comes a bit of pressure to perform well and stay there because every team wants to raise their game against us.
"Our focus is on our performance and making sure we execute what we've worked on."
The coach believes his team's consistency and resilience have been key factors behind their strong start to the season.
"I've been pleased with our consistency and our attitude. We've shown resilience in difficult moments and started to build some momentum. Defensively we've worked hard for each other and with the ball we've been creating opportunities through patience and discipline.
"The most exciting thing for me is that I know we haven't hit our peak performance yet. I'm hoping we can find that in the second half of the season and really kick on."
Preparation for the Featherstone challenge has centred around sharpening discipline and decision-making.
"Against strong opposition, small errors can be costly, so we've been working hard on getting those details right and ending sets well on both sides of the ball."
Danville was full of praise for this weekend's opponents, describing the Lions as one of the benchmark teams in the competition.
"They're a very well-organised side, well coached and have quality right across the squad. They're physically strong with some very good experienced players from the professional game. They've shown they can win games in different ways and their league position is no accident."
The battle through the middle of the field is expected to be a decisive factor.
"Field position, completion rates and discipline will all play a major role. Games between good sides are often decided by who handles the key moments best rather than anything spectacular. If we find our rhythm early and get our defensive system right, we'll be in with a good chance."
There was positive news on the team selection front, with Danville reporting a largely healthy squad heading into the weekend.
"The only players unavailable are Alfie Walker, who is away on holiday, and Dave Bade with a knee injury. We welcome back Freddie Watts after a week off, while Jack Taylor returns after a Man of the Match performance in the academy. New signing Leo Tennison will also come into the 19-man squad."
Strong competition for places has also pleased the head coach, with several players pushing hard for first-team opportunities.
"Makesi David, Toby Matson and Louey Pinkerton, amongst others, are all knocking on the door for the first team. That's exactly what you want as a coach because competition drives standards and keeps everyone improving."
As for his final message to the players before the trip to Featherstone, Danville's instructions are simple.
"Be confident, trust each other and enjoy the challenge. We've earned the right to be involved in games like this through our performances so far. If we work hard for each other and stick to our game plan, we'll give ourselves every chance."
While the fixture could provide an indication of who may challenge for honours later in the season, Danville is keen to keep things in perspective.
"It's certainly a good benchmark for both teams, but there's still a long way to go. One result won't define anything. What it can do is show where both sides are at and what areas they may need to improve as the year progresses."
With first place on the line and two of the league's strongest sides set to go head-to-head, all the ingredients are in place for a compelling contest this weekend.
