Danville Calls for Focus as Skirlaugh Prepare for National Cup Opener

Head Coach Matt Danville says his side are approaching this weekend’s National Cup clash against Bristol All Golds with confidence after a strong week of preparation on the training field.

Skirlaugh head into the competition determined to set high standards from the outset, with intensity and focus evident throughout the squad during the build-up to the fixture. Alongside first-team preparations, the club’s Academy side are also preparing for a major cup fixture of their own, making it an important weekend across the club.

“The lads have trained well, and there’s been a good intensity about the group all week,” said Danville. “We’ve spoken about setting standards early and making sure we approach this competition with the right attitude.”

Despite facing opposition from outside the local competition structure, Skirlaugh are expecting a difficult challenge from Bristol All Golds, with cup rugby often bringing added energy and unpredictability.

Any knockout fixture presents its own dangers, and the lads are preparing for a physical contest against a side expected to compete hard for the full 80 minutes. However, the focus remains firmly on Skirlaugh’s own performance and maintaining the standards they have set internally.

The National Cup represents an important opportunity for the club this season, both in terms of building momentum and creating excitement around the team.

“Any competition you enter, you want to be competitive in and try to go as far as possible,” Danville said. “Cup rugby creates excitement around the club, and we want to give our supporters something to get behind.”

With cup rugby often decided by discipline and composure in key moments, much of the week’s training has centred around game management, defensive effort and consistency.

The coaching staff have placed particular emphasis on staying calm under pressure, completing sets, and working collectively in defence to control momentum swings during the game.

Skirlaugh head into the fixture with a largely healthy squad, while strong competition for places continues to push standards throughout the group.

Attention has also turned towards the club’s thriving Academy setup, with several Under 18s players impressing in recent weeks. Danville highlighted Harvey Dickinson, Harry Walker, Mason Gore, Reece Batty, Ed Mills, Jack Johnson and Jake Hargreaves as young players who have caught the eye with their recent performances.

One player set for a special moment this weekend is Mason Gore, who is expected to make his first-team debut after impressing at Academy level.

“It’s a fantastic achievement for Mason,” said Danville. “As a club, we want that pathway to be there, and if young players earn their chance, they’ll get opportunities.”

As Skirlaugh prepare to take to the field, the message from the coaching staff remains simple — compete for everything, work hard for one another, and represent the club with pride.

“We often speak as a group about chasing that feeling after a game,” Danville added. “That feeling of being proud of the performance, knowing we’ve given everything and earned the result through hard work and commitment.”
