Promoting rugby league since 1980
From Acorns to Oaks: The Rise of Skirlaugh RLFC
Established in 1980, Skirlaugh RLFC is well known in amateur rugby league and has grown from a small village side into one of the strongest amateur teams in England, competing in the National Conference League.
Playing out of Eastside Community Sports & Social Club, we have enjoyed major success, including multiple BARLA National Cup wins and a National Conference League title.
Known for our community roots and long-term youth philosophy, we consistently promote competitiveness and our motto is a key part of our identity.
“From small acorns, the mighty oak tree grows.”
This is reflected in our steady development, from humble beginnings in the early 1980s to becoming a respected force in amateur rugby league with hundreds of young players in our youth set up.
Synonymous with our black, gold and white colours, the club has produced a string of high-level talent, including Steve McNamara and Lee Newton, reinforcing our reputation as a strong development club.
Built on tradition, driven by success since 1980
Founded in 1980 after a Boxing Day friendly in the village of Skirlaugh, we have grown into one of the top amateur rugby league sides in England.
Guided by our “From small acorns, the mighty oak tree grows” motto, we have built success on strong foundations and community spirit.
Early years at Benningholme Lane (1980–1996) saw rapid progress through the Hull & District League, winning multiple league titles and cups. By the mid-1990s, we had become a dominant force, earning the nickname “Cup Kings” and achieving a historic treble in 1995-96, including the BARLA National Cup.
In 1996, the club moved to Eastside Community Sports Centre and joined the National Conference League. We quickly rose to the Premier Division, winning back-to-back National Cups (1999, 2000) and, in 2007, became National Conference League champions - one of our greatest achievements.
Skirlaugh has produced numerous professional and international players, including Steve McNamara and Lee Newton, and we are proud to be one of the longest-serving members of the National Conference League, with a strong legacy in amateur rugby league.
L6ve Life: The Lasting Legacy of Lee Newton
Lee Newton may have passed away from Motor Neurone Disease in 2017, but his legacy continues to live on at Skirlaugh.
A hugely-respected figure at Skirlaugh and across East Yorkshire rugby league, Lee was renowned for his powerful running, toughness and leadership. He played professionally for Hull FC, but it was at Skirlaugh where he became a true club legend, driving success and setting the standard for commitment.
Diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in 2013 at just 42, Lee faced the challenge with remarkable courage and positivity. Supported by his wife Caroline, daughters Hannah and Evie, and a wide circle of family and friends, he continued to embrace life - enjoying family time, running his business, fundraising and even skydiving.
Since passing away in 2017, The L6ve Life Foundation, named after his shirt number, was established to support those living with MND and fund the search for a cure. He is remembered as a player, leader and inspiration whose spirit continues to drive the club forward.
