Back to Basics: Danville Focused on Responding the Right Way

Last weekend's defeat to Featherstone Lions was a difficult one to take, and Head Coach Matt Danville has been honest in his assessment as he prepares for another stern test against Siddal Academy this weekend.

Reflecting on the performance, Danville admitted the side fell short of the standards they have set throughout an otherwise positive season.

"It was a disappointing result and, more importantly, a disappointing performance in a number of areas," he said. "Having reviewed the game, I felt we were well below the standards we've set ourselves this season. We didn't execute consistently enough, made too many errors at key moments, and weren't ruthless enough when opportunities presented themselves.

"Credit to Featherstone, they took advantage of that, but we know we can perform much better than we did."

The coaching staff have wasted little time addressing those issues, with attention to detail becoming a major focus throughout the week.

"We've looked closely at our completion rate, our defensive discipline and some of our decision-making under pressure," Danville explained. "At this level, small lapses can have a big impact and unfortunately we had too many of those last week.

"Training has been about getting back to basics, improving our standards and making sure we're sharper in those key moments. I think some players could be becoming a little complacent. After such a great start to the season, we have to remember what got us here in the first place. That was all the hard work and standards we set in training each week, and that's something both Tim and I have reiterated to the group."

Despite the disappointment, Danville believes there were still positives to take from the game.

"The effort and commitment never disappeared, even when things weren't going our way. There were spells where we moved the ball well and showed glimpses of what we're capable of. The challenge now is turning those spells into a consistent 80-minute performance."

Attention now turns to Siddal Academy, who claimed victory in the reverse fixture earlier in the season. It is a result that still provides valuable lessons for the squad.

"That game showed us the level of consistency and intensity required against a side like Siddal," said Danville. "We competed in parts of the game but weren't clinical enough when opportunities came our way.

"We also learned that you can't switch off against quality opposition because they'll punish mistakes. Those lessons have been revisited over the last few weeks as we've spoken about improving completion rates and being more dominant in the ruck on both sides of the ball."

The Skirlaugh coach expects another fiercely competitive encounter this weekend.

"They're always a tough side to play against. They're well organised, physical and they play with confidence. We know they'll bring intensity from the first minute and they'll test us right across the field.

"They're one of the stronger teams in the competition. The league table may not suggest that, but trust me, there are no guaranteed two points against Siddal and we'll need to be at our best to compete with them."

Key improvement areas have already been identified.

"We'd like to improve our ball control, our discipline and our ability to build pressure for longer periods. Against good teams you have to earn the right to play and that's something we need to do better.

"We also want to be more resilient defensively and make sure we're winning the physical battle for longer periods of the game."

Preparations this week have seen the Academy and Under-18s train together with the First Team due to a number of players currently receiving treatment.

"Tuesday was a collective session with the Under-18s and Academy because we've got a few bodies on the treatment table. Thursday focused on some defensive detail before moving into our game preparation scenarios.

"The players have responded well and there's been a good intensity throughout the week. The focus has been on tightening up the areas that let us down last week while also making sure we play with confidence and belief in our own game."

There are likely to be some changes to the squad, although Danville insists the club will not abandon its principles after one disappointing result.

"We've got a couple of forced changes due to holidays and work commitments, but competition for places is healthy and everyone knows they need to perform.

"We won't be tearing everything up after one result. There'll be a few tweaks, but there are also a couple of individual performances that haven't been at the standard required over the last few weeks, so there will be some discussions to be had.

"We believe in what we're doing, but we need to improve the execution and standards within that approach. Everyone understands we can't carry passengers every week."

With the season entering a crucial phase, Danville believes the response to last week's setback is just as important as the result itself.

"It's hugely important. Every team faces setbacks during a season, but it's how you respond that defines you. We want to show character, resilience and a determination to put things right. The players know that and they've embraced that challenge this week."

As for what he wants to see from his side this weekend, the message is clear.

"I want to see effort, discipline and commitment for the full 80 minutes. I want us to compete for every ball, defend with intensity and stick together when things get tough.

"If we do those things and execute our game plan properly, we'll give ourselves every chance."

The message delivered to the players throughout the week has been equally straightforward.

"Trust the work you've done, trust each other and play with confidence. We don't need to overcomplicate things. We need to focus on our standards, our attitude and making sure we deliver the type of performance we know we're capable of."

And when asked what a successful afternoon would look like this weekend, Danville's answer centred on pride and performance.

"A successful afternoon starts with seeing a reaction. I want to see a team that competes hard, plays with pride and delivers a performance that reflects the effort they've put in throughout the week.

"If we do that and stick to our processes, the result will take care of itself. Most importantly, I want us to walk off the field knowing we've represented the club the right way."
