Skirlaugh head to Keighley Albion this Saturday for the final fixture of the Cross-Conference Play-Off group stage — with a place in the quarter-finals on the line.
After two rounds of group fixtures, the equation for the Black & Gold is clear:
Win at Keighley and Skirlaugh progress.
The play-off campaign began in encouraging fashion with a 32–16 victory over Distington at Eastside, extending the club’s unbeaten home record and putting the first competition points on the board.
Last weekend, however, brought a much tougher afternoon.
A disciplined and well-organised Saddleworth Rangers side became the first visiting team to win at Eastside in 2026, producing a deserved 28–6 victory and taking control of the group with two wins from two.
It was a disappointing result for Skirlaugh, but the play-off journey remains alive.
THE GROUP PICTURE
While Saddleworth have placed themselves in a commanding position, the battle for the remaining qualification place will be decided when Skirlaugh travel to Keighley.
Keighley began their campaign with a 32–4 defeat away at Saddleworth before responding emphatically last weekend, defeating Distington 52–12 on home soil.
That result leaves Keighley and Skirlaugh level with one victory each heading into the final round.
Keighley currently hold the stronger points difference, meaning Skirlaugh cannot afford to rely on calculations or results elsewhere.
The task is straightforward.
Go to Keighley. Win the game. Secure a place in the quarter-finals.
A RESPONSE REQUIRED
Saturday offers Matt Danville’s side an immediate opportunity to respond to their first home defeat of the year.
The performance against Saddleworth fell below the standards the group has established throughout an otherwise impressive campaign. Skirlaugh struggled to turn early possession into points before the visitors took control through a combination of strong carries, disciplined defence and clinical finishing.
There will be lessons to take from that afternoon, but little value in dwelling on it.
The focus now moves entirely towards Keighley and producing the performance required when the pressure is at its highest.
Throughout the season, Skirlaugh have demonstrated resilience. They have responded to difficult results, competed in demanding fixtures and continued to develop as a group.
They will need to show those qualities again this weekend.
A DIFFICULT TRIP
Keighley Albion will provide a significant challenge.
They finished top of the Yorkshire A Conference after winning 14 of their league fixtures and recording an impressive points difference of more than 400.
Their 52-point performance against Distington demonstrated the attacking threat they carry, while home advantage will give them further confidence heading into Saturday.
Keighley also know that avoiding defeat would be enough to protect their position above Skirlaugh, placing the responsibility on the visitors to take the game to them.
Skirlaugh must therefore find the right balance between attacking with ambition and maintaining the discipline required in a high-pressure play-off fixture.
Composure, defensive resilience and taking opportunities when they arrive will all be essential.
EVERYTHING TO PLAY FOR
The regular season produced plenty for this Skirlaugh group to be proud of.
Fifteen league victories, a strong National Cup run, an entire regular season unbeaten at Eastside and opportunities provided to several talented young players have all demonstrated the progress being made.
But Saturday is about what comes next.
Victory would take Skirlaugh into the Play-Off Quarter-Finals on Saturday 26 September and keep the opportunity of promotion very much alive.
Defeat would bring the campaign to an end.
There are no second chances and no complicated permutations.
One final group fixture.
One opportunity to respond.
One performance needed.
