Ex Players Association Continues to Make a Lasting Impact
It has been another busy and meaningful few weeks for the Skirlaugh RLFC Ex Players Association, with members once again demonstrating that the club's family spirit extends far beyond the playing field.
Remembering a True Skirlaugh Servant
The Association was proud to organise the inaugural Andy Spencer Memorial Trophy, which was contested when Skirlaugh welcomed local rivals Hull Dockers at Eastside.
Andy Spencer, affectionately known to many as "Spenner", dedicated more than 20 years of service to Skirlaugh RLFC as a committee member. While many supporters will remember the players who wore the shirt, Andy was one of the people working tirelessly behind the scenes to make those opportunities possible.
As one former committee member summed it up perfectly, "Andy did all the things no one else wanted to do."
Throughout his years at the club, Andy introduced countless sponsors, helped strengthen the club's long-standing relationship with Swiss Cottage, and was instrumental in supporting the A Team through Ali's Bar. His commitment to Skirlaugh never wavered, right up until his passing in 2019, with even the collection at his funeral dedicated to supporting the future of the club he loved.
The Ex Players Association invited members of both Skirlaugh and Hull Dockers, past and present, to come together in Andy's memory. Before kick-off there was a moving moment as both first teams, joined by our young Shrimps players, stood together for a minute's applause in honour of a man who gave so much to the club.
Instead of a traditional Man of the Match award, commemorative medals were presented to standout performers from both teams, before the Andy Spencer Memorial Trophy was awarded to the winning side.

Speaking on behalf of the Association, founder Kev Stones said:
"Andy Spencer was a great Skirlaugh man. He gave endless hours to make it possible for others to represent our great club out on the pitch. He did the jobs no one else wanted to do and never really got any thanks for it. Saturday against Dockers was every current and ex-player saying thank you to Andy."
It was a fitting tribute to a man whose legacy will continue to live on at Skirlaugh RLFC.
Supporting the Wider Rugby League Family
The Ex Players Association has also continued to show that rugby league is one big family.
Members recently sent a card and their best wishes to Fryston player Ben Blackmore, who spent 12 days in a coma following a brain bleed. Ben, who featured against Skirlaugh earlier this season, is now beginning his recovery, and everyone connected with Skirlaugh wishes him continued strength and a full recovery.

The Association has also donated £250 to support current Skirlaugh player Kell Sharpe, helping him during his recovery from a serious dislocated hip injury.
Building Something Special
Since its formation, the Skirlaugh RLFC Ex Players Association has gone from strength to strength, bringing together former players, volunteers and supporters to celebrate the club's proud history while continuing to support those connected to it.
Whether it's honouring club legends, supporting members of the wider rugby league community or helping former players through difficult times, the Association continues to embody everything that makes Skirlaugh RLFC such a special club.
